I neded to file a COS from H4 to J1......Myquestion is that how can i file my I-539f rom a faster service center in order to get it done faster,as California service center is too slow and i might not get my COS in time .Hadron others please help!! iWILL BE JOINING RESIDENCY IN nEW yORK AND i  CURRENTLY LIVE IN cALIFORNIA....

- Are you SURE that you really want a J1 ? Yes, we all wanted to return when we started on J1 !
- Read through the tons of posts documenting the trials and tribulations of people dealing with J1 issues.

- Are you from a country with a bad US consulate ? If no, why don't you go back and get your J1 stamped ?

- I don't know at which center you have to file. Typically the place you live at. Do you know someone on the east cost who could be a mail drop for you ?

- If your COS takes maybe a month beyond July 1st, the program in all likelyhood wouldn't terminate you or anything. They are used to IMG's having visa troubles and usually allow you to start as an 'observer' until the papers are through.

My 2 cents
even if u have to waste one year for H1 do that and do not join on J visa it is 2 tempting to join residency on J and every one wants to go back and serve their country but reaility is that not many people fo back.
I would think 10 times not twice before changing from H4to J

Thank you guys for your answers. Hadron I am taking j visa as a last resort .I couldnt clear step3 and am an old grad. So gotta latch onto this oppurtunity .That is the same reason why I wanna get the COS here and not chance getting stuck in my home country. Now According to you I can use an address on the EAST Coast .Is that allowed??I do have relatives in Philly & NYC. Considering my address with ECFMG and on the NOC from home Govt. as well as my app for j1 is all in my current address in California. Can I still use a new address when I send my DS-2019 to INS?? Do I need to submit a new Change of address form etc. before I can do this?? Please help me with this .I really need your help !!Thank you!
P.S. Currently I am waiting on my DS-2019 from ECFMG. Willthat have my current address on it ?

Thank you hadron.........I do have ppl on the East coast (VSC) whod love to be a mail drop 4 me......Do u think id be ok to apply for my COS from a Philly address and in the meantime submit a AR-11 change of address form to INS(showing address change frm CA to PA)......Also does my DS-2019 show any address .....I mean would it affect my application??Another tangential question is if I thought of doin it .how come everyone ain't doin it??Am i Makin a mistake??Please reply me as I am extremely worried.........Thanks !!

If you submit AR11, make sure you update ECFMG. You can update your ECFMG address online by signing onto their web site.

Be sure to have your name on the inside of their mailbox. Also, mail a couple of letters to yourself at that address. That way you are in the postal service database and your USCIS paperwork can reach you there.

I am not an attorney, my advice is pure speculation here. As you will be taking up a job in NY, it is not unreasonable to file from there.

> .....Also does my DS-2019 show any address ....

I believe you haven't received it yet. Log into OASIS and change your address there.

> Am i Makin a mistake??

I believe you are making a grave mistake by accepting a J1 visa for residency. A little while ago I recommended to someone to see a shrink before they sign their DS2091, as a result I got chewed out by some folks here.

No matter how old you are. You will have to pass step3 at some point, waiting for a year to start residency on H1b is WELL WORTH IT.

i agree with hadron on J1 waiver mistake, u will become older and older mentally just trying to convert the visa later.

Thank you folks........One more question if Imay .....Does it matter that I change my address midway through my ds-2019 being processed?? Or should I just wait till my DS-2019 is dispatched and then change address/??Thank you guys .you've beeen great .Keep up the great work!!

for Hadron

Thanx Hadron.I was told by an ECFMG /evsp rep that the DS-2019 doesn't have my address.only the institution Information where i'll be joining..Thats why I thought what I did.....Do you think the rep was wrong??
