Guys, I am a H1-b married to a US citizen, My visa is expiring
at the end of may 2009. I also have a pending green card process through
my employer, recently my wife and I have decided to go through the family
based GC process as it is much quicker but it will also mean that I will have to
drop my currently filed GC process from my employer, My question is will
I still be able to get an extension on my visa on my new green card process

You don't have to drop the existing employer process right away.

Once you have filed an I-485 based on your wife's sponsorship, you can get an EAD in 2-3 months so you won't need the H1B to keep working.

jackolantern is absolutely right! Don't drop your employment based GC until you have EAD or even GC in hand.

I was in same situation as yours and I didn't withdraw my employment based GC application until after my interview & I-551 stamp in the passport.
