Urgent - Implications of Federal Aid on Green Cards

Hello everyone,

I'm currently on my OPT and due to the flat job market haven't had any luck in finding a job yet. I had a medical emergency recently and had to be admitted to a hospital. Unfortunately, my medical insurance had expired about a fortnight prior to this event . Now, I'm faced with paying about 4K for my medical bills. I am not in a position to pay that amount and have been advised by the hospital authorities to apply for Federal Aid since I fall well below the current poverty line.

My biggest concern is whether opting to go for Federal Aid will in any way hamper my chances of applying/obtaining a Green Card at some point in the future. I have until the end of this week to file for the Federal Aid if I decide to go with that option. I would really appreciate any help/advice in this matter.

Thanks,
javaduke

It will be in your record permanently. Will definitely be a concern in your future GC, since your not seeking welfare is one of the main requirements for eligibility for GC.

What kind of federal aid is this ?

Question: What kind of federal aid is this ?

This is going to be Federal Aid for the financially underpriviledged i.e. those who fall below the poverty line.

I know that the GC questionnaire has questions about Federal Aid etc. Can one get away without mentioning that information???

Thanks for the reply. I was despairing that I just wasted my time by posting my query on this site. Guess it wasn't completely useless.

I will suggest work out the payment plan with the Hospital. Am Sure they will work it out. Further, they may discount some portion of the bill amount.

But avoid taking the Federal Aid, which will remain on record permanently.

Sayed

You are probably right in suggesting going in with a payment plan. I should make enquiries about that immediately.

Thanks.......
