Im a Canadian citizen currently in Canada, I have applied for a US Passport at the consulate, and now its pending, due to arrive in 3 weeks. I booked a plane ticket for next week cause I need to go to the US for 2 weeks, NEXT week, BEFORE my US Passport would arrive. I planned on doing this with my Valid Canadian Passport, but now the Consulate says if you have a Pending US Passport, you CANT use your Canadian one to enter the US. Does anyone know if ill have trouble? Im crossing the border VIA greyhound, then flying from Seattle. Customs AND Immigration BOTH said theres no reason I cant travel on a Canadian Passport while US one is pending. Only the consulate says I cant. Can anyone please offer me some re-assurance that Customs wont bother me about this???

Basically, will I have issues coming to US on a Canadian Passport, with a US Passport pending at the US Consulate in Canada?

Immigration and Customs says NO issues, Consulate says YES issues...anyone experience similar situation???

After calling NUMEROUS Customs offices, including the ones id actually be going through, im a litle more relieved, they all think its ridiculous that I even have a doubt my Canadian Passoprt wont get me through.

US citizens cannot re-enter the US on any foreign passport. Now whether the inspectors at the POE enforce that, I cannot speculate.

Ya but ive ALWAYS been a citizen technically, applying for a US passport just declares/recognizes it. BUT at the time of entering the US,the US passport application will have just started being processed (if even that much), and wont be ready for 2-3 weeks AFTER.

-- Yes, and you exactly need this - the document that proves/declares/recognizes it - which is a passport. How would they know otherwise that you are "technically" a USC. You need to prove this "technicality"!

Lol right of course!! But I want to enter the US with a Canadian Passport, AS a Canadian, why should a pending US Passport affect that..

No offense meant but I am amazed why you cannot understand such a simple point. US citizens HAVE to present themselves at a US POE as a US citizen. There is no choice available to them. Regardless of how many other citizenships you have, in the eyes of the US you are a US citizen. Thus enter as one. I hold three citizenships, but I CANNOT present myself as a Canadian or Pakistani to a US official at a POE.

I understand that perfectly, and understand that youre very educated on the subject. BUT I DONT have a US Passport yet, and they JUST started processing it (if they even did yet). Why would the Customs officer even dream of askin me for a US Passport??<I guess thats what im really asking.

I understand that as a US Citizen you cannot enter the US under any other citizenship. But I dont have a USP yet, I have merely applied for one, and it will have just started "processing" the day I leave. In addition, im entering on bus, I can just show a BC if I want (I know its the same thing citizenship wise, but still kinda deflects the whole "passport" issue).

Another ?

I have another question and dont wanna start a million threads.

After being in the US almost all of the allotted 6 months, upon my return to Canada, the Customs Officer never stamped or scanned my passport, but when I arrived in the USA the US Officer, did stamp it. So regardless of "pending US Passport" and all that, would this be an issue? Only time I "scanned" my passport upon leaving the US was at a self service Kiosk in the airport (to pick up tix). Would the US Officer say "according to this you never left the US and cant re-enter now?" (Again, if replying to this question, dont consider the rest of the thread).

Thanx.

I'll be honest. Your last query is not clear to me at all. As a citizen, you have nothing to worry with regards to entering the US and/or overstaying. By law you cannot be refused entry into the US. Even if you do not use a US passport, you can only be fined $100 and not refused entry. Have a safe trip!!!
