Urgent: H4 problem

I need to extend the H4 visa for my child. His passport is valid till
March 2006. My visa is valid till Jan 2007.

Can we apply for the extension of the H4 visa now or do we need to renew the passport for my child first.

Passport valid ?? So apply for a new passport .. It doesnot take much time .. With in 20 days you get back the passport.Then apply for visa extension ..by filing I-539.

Do you want to file H4 extension of status with USCIS or applying Visa at consulate? Extension of status and VISA is different. If you are applying H4 Extension with USCIS then you can file the extension. If want to get Visa stamp better extend passport before going for visa stamp.
** One can renew the passport from US consulate and many consulates give the new passport copy next day. Embassy of India DC gives new passport copy next day
