URGENT Canadian travel question/SL National/US green card holder

Hi All,

I am a Sri Lanka citizen and a U.S. Green card holder.
My passport has expired. I have given up my old passport
to the Sri Lanka Consulate to get a new one, and will not
receive the new one until April.

In the meantime, there has been a death in my family and I need
to travel to Canada. I may get back the expired passport from
the Sri Lanka consulate for my travel.

Anybody knows whether I absolutely need to have a valid passport
along with my green card for getting into Canada and returning
back into the U.S.

I actually called he Canadian consulate, and they told me that no passport is needed, just bring your green card.
