Hi:

I came to USA as student (on F1 visa) in Molecular Biology and have completed my MS am currently working in the same field on an H1 B. I will be going to Canada/Montreal to get my paspport stamped - does anybody have any negative-positive experience to share...do they harass you - is Mexico better...pls advise

I have a Bachelor and Master' Degree from India in Microbiology and MS from Amercan University in Molecular Biology. Am working as a research scientist in the same field. I have excellent references and an International Publication.

Would appreciate any feedback.

Since you have a US degree your stamping may not create a problem either in Canada or Mexico. The choice of where to go is yours depending on where you are in US. One thing you should note however; your interest is Microbiology; an area which is looked at with a little suspect from security area. You can be refused a visa from that aspect also saying they might require an additional time to conduct some security check. If it were before April 2002, you could have returned from Canada or Mexico by virtue of "automatic revalidation" of your existing visa from travel to Canada/Mexico if the stay was less than 30 days; but now a new rule prohibits that. If for any reason during a trip to Canada/Mexico you apply for a visa which is denied for "ANY" reason; you are debarred from reentry into US and have to make a trip back home from that country.

Thanx for the feedback..I prefer to go Montreal as I live in NYC....are u aware of any recent case in Canada..are they stamping H1B for Third party Nationals or they just send u to your home country....

debarred is a strong word

If you dont get the visa stamp then you have to take the home country US consulate route to get back into US. Just be prepared to do that as a contingency/backup plan.

There is no threat on Microbiologists as long as your faith(from your name) and country are considered harmless.
