Urgent! Can F-1 student still apply for OPT after the EAD approved with I-485

We are in the I-485 pending stage for green card. My wife will graduate this december, can she apply for optional prcactice traning under F-1? We already got the EAD and AP (in October 2002). But she will start the PHD program next Fall semester (Aug 2003), she hope she can keep the non-imigration status until we get the Green card. Her I-20 will expired on Dec 20, 2002. We appreciate your help in advance.

when a F1 holder applies for 485 they will loose their F1 status. So, your wife would have already lost her F1 status. So, I am not sure whether she can apply for OPT. it would be better if you check with the International Student Office in her college.
there were few related posts in this group couple of days back. if you get a chance go through them.
we were in similar situation few months back. my wife just started Ph.D this fall. she was on F1 before we applied for 485.

Thanks a lot. Our lawyer told us she lost her F-1 status since we apply for I-485 in Aug 2002. But the person at ISO of her university recommended her to keep the F-1 status while the I-485 is pending. Anyway, I think what you suggested and message from our lawyer is right. She will use the EAD to work and start her PHD program later.
