Unused Re-Entry Permit

Here is the scenario,

Let us say I apply for Re-Entry Permit (REP) and then leave US. It takes as much as more than a year to get REP approved. So I decide to come back to US before 12 months expire. So technically I have not used REP. I continue to stay in US and later would like to apply REP again for future intended 2 year absence.

The question is,
1. "Will my application of REP the second time will have any effect knowing I had previously applied REP?"

2. Since REP takes more than a year to approve, "what do I do if it gets rejected?"

Thanks to repliers of this post.

Is this question too absurd to respond? Let me make an another attempt to state in a different way.

- I apply for REP and go abroad.
- The REP takes more than a year to approve so I decide to visit US within 12 months of departure.
- My REP gets approved. But I continue to stay in US.
------------------------------------------------------

Later,
- I decide to go abroad with the intention of staying away for 2 years.
- I apply for REP and leave.

Question -
Is applying REP the second time has any bearing knowing that I applied before (but not used it)?

Thanks JoeF

I am in the same situation.

When I do have to apply for another Re Entry permit, I will just return the one that I did not use.

I wonder if the INS would be so kind as to return my 110 $ fee ?

You have a good sense of humor, but USCIS doesn't share it...

What is the number of the form?

I have a GC and want to work in Canada, So should I get the Re-Entry Permit after I got the employment visa from Canada first or the other way around? How soon can I leave?

Thanks Joe - but are you sure

You need to return the old reentry permit with the new application. If it wasn't used, there would be no stamp in it. So it would not be a problem at all.

You sure Joe?

Part 3. question 4 on the I-131 form asks if you have been issued one before and the date issued.

I presume that if you apply for a re-entry, even though it does not have a stamp and used, you will have to declare it on the new I-131.

Hence my question is - does this reduce the chances of getting another one (i hear that they only provide one for 2 yrs the first and second time and there onwards in 1yr increments)...

?
