Unmarried son over 21 of US Citizen

Hi Guys,

I was wondering if you can help me in solving query related to my petition filled by my mother. Currently my preference category is family 1st (unmarried son over age 21) and my priority date is Nov 2002.

#1 - If I get married, in that case will my mother has to file separate petition for me and my spouse or only my spouse name will be added to existing petition with priority date Nov 2002

#2 - If my mother has to file new petition or name is added to existing petition, will the priority date will also get change (from Nov 2002 to day of new petition is filed/approved) because change in priority date could lead to delay of processing for another 7-8 years.

Also when my mother became citizen and she requested USCIS to change her status from permanent resident to citizen at that time my priority date was kept same but preference category was changed from Family 2B to Family 1st.

Incase of marriage your preference category will be shifted to 3rd preference while your priority date will remain the same, no need for new petition. you might have to wait 2 more year, but you can immigrate with your spouse. Marriage after GC will take 5-6 years for your spouse to come to US

The priority date doesn't change. Your preference category does. When you get married, notify USCIS and they'll move your petition into an appropriate category. No new petition is required.
