Hi, All,

I got a question regarding the unemployment benefits vs the future citizenship application.

My wife got her GC on 3/2002. She may be out of job next several months. If she apply for the unemployment benefits, How this going to affect her future citizenship application?

Thanks a lot in advance for any input,

travel oversea

Thanks for your reply. Just one more question,

if she travel oversea during the period of getting the unemployment benefits, is there any trouble to come back US?

Thanks,

I'm uneployed too

I'm unemployed too and I'm receiving benefits. There are certain rules one has to follow to be eligible to receive those. I.e. be willing to accept work, one must search for work etc. Also, every 2 weeks I have to mail a form with those informtaion.

Anyway, she should be able to leave for 2-3 weeks and to to loose the benefits. You may want to check with your local unemployment office.

Thanks.

Thanks a lot for the input. What my wife is thinking is if she get layoff, she'd like to go back her parents home to take a break for 3 weeks, may be longer- like 1 month. What happen if she apply for UI benefits after she come back from her 3 weeks or 1 month vacation?

That may depend. Here in CA the unemployment claim is valid for a year with a maximum of 26 weekly payments. (I think it's the same all over. UI is some kind of State/Federal hybrid benefit.)

She may file the claim now, may not be eliigible for payments while she's gone but the UI payments may resume upen her return and after she proves that she is willing to accept work and that she's looking for work.
Call them up, they will give you more definite answers.
