Hello All,
I saw some outdated posts on this topic but wanted to see if anyone had any insight post COVID-19.
I am a Canadian who worked in NY almost 5 years. I was furloughed then laid off due to Covid. I was initially approved for unemployment during the furlough period, but denied after I moved back to Canada. After countless calls to both NYS DOL, and Service Canada, it seems no one can help. NYS says I’m not eligible because I’m not in state (and not able to work unrestricted).
Canada says they uphold their side of the reciprocal agreement but have no involvement in claiming from the individual states. I read on an older thread that Canada (used to?) process claims on the Canadians behalf.
Thank you all for your insights in advance. This has been an incredibly upsetting situation financially and otherwise having paid high NY tax for 5 years.
