Unemployment Period in 5 year Emp History

I got my GC in Oct 2001. From Jan 2002 - Dec 2002 I was unemployed due to bad economy. I survived on Unemp benefits, past savings etc and got myself involved in learning new programming languages on my own and not through any school. Now in my N400 what should I put:
1. Leave jan 2002 - dec 2002 and mention the period only for which I worked.
2. Mark that period as Unemployed/ Self study for Job improvement.

Since there might be lot of folks here impacted by the downturn of 2002, I would appreciate any replies.
 
They only ask for EMP history. SO just put the dates when you were employed. During the interview you will have a chance to expaline if asked. Also yoyur tax returns will show the same.

I do not think INS care about EMP or UnEMP as a determining factor..so just put the accurate EMP info.
