Unemployed at interview

NYer here. My fingerprinting was at the beginning of July, so I am expecting a notice for an interview in September (at the earliest).

I am self-employed and this year has been a disaster when it comes to work (never happened to me before). The question is: if I'm unemployed at the time of the interview, will that affect the outcome. Chances are I will be employed, but if not, am I better off postponing the interview?

TIA

P.S.
My application was based on the 5 year rule.

I don't think it should have any negative effect in your application for naturalization. Focus on getting a job, but don't worry about naturalization because it should not have any effect. The only potential effect could be questions about how do you support yourself, but I doubt it will get to that. Nothing you couldn't answer the truth (savings, or however you are getting by).

Good luck.

Don't sweat it - employment is not a requirement for natz.

The main reasons for employment related questions on the N-400 are to back up residency claims and indicate whether you ever worked for your GC sponsor, assuming of course that you gained your GC through employment. Even with this in mind, there are often exceptions (e.g. AC21 change of employer, or out-of-state contracting) so nothing is set in stone.
