UN,

I know it is essential to get married before I-485 approval to get the benefit for the spouse from employment based immigration.

Now when the spouse files for I-485 what are the documents that INS asks to prove that marriage has occured prior to I-485 approval. I know it would be marriage certificate at the time of registration of marriage from home country. Some times the marriages are not registered especially in India. They have a big marriage occasion and reception etc etc but at the end not all marriages are registered and request for marriage certificates.

SO if some body marries on May-01-2004 and do not register the marriage until May-21-2004 and the I-485 of the principle applicant got approved on May-16-2004 !!!!!!!!!! How does the INS take this???
Can the spouse get the benefit of filing for greencard as a dependent or not in this case. Thanks.

Does your registration letter will have two different dates like marriage date and registration date?
USCIS takes the registration date as marriage date. To avoid such situation people register the marriage before actual wedding.
