When you will go by road, dont tell that you are going to apply for PR. Just tell them I am going to visit my friends. If they ask the location, tell them someplace where any of your friends live. It might not harm that you are goint to apply for PR, but to be on the safe side just tell them you are going to visit friend.
Regarding your VISA stamp
YOU DO NOT NEED VALID VISA STAMP IN YOUR PASSPORT TO COME BACK TO USA FROM CANADA STAYING LESS THAN 30 DAYS IF YOU ARE STILL IN H1B.
This is called automatic revalidation rule. Take your H1B approval, employer letter, recent pay stubs. Remember, you need Canadian VISA to enter Canada. When you will go, you dont have to hand over your white I-94 what you got when you last in the USA, if they ask, tell them you need that to come back. When you will back, just show them your H1b approval notice, and that white I-94 card. You will be fine. They are supposed to let you in by law.
I know personally people travelled like that.
I personally dont have a even expired H1B visa stamp. I just have my F1 VISA, I got converted from F1 to H1. I never had H1b visa. Still I am eligible to enter based on my valid H1b approval notice. Because, that AUTOMATIC REVALIDATION RULE can be enjoyed by expired visa holder of same category or diffrent category.
Hope this helps.
Folks if you had similiar experiences about travelling Canada, or if you will have this experience in future, please post here. Remeber we are talking about coming back from Canada to US without US VISA stamp by enjoying AUTOMATIC REVALIDATION RULE.
Good Luck!!!!
