tricky case - have both b1/b2 and c1/d visas

My friend has both visas but he entered the U.S using the tourist visa b1/b2. i was wondering if hes able to activate his c1/d visa if he gets a job offer to work on a ship or a yacht while while in the U.S on the tourist visa. Thank you in advance.

He has to exit and re-enter using his C1/D visa. Keep in mind that a C1/D visa is for crew members who intend to arrive in and exit from the United States with the same airline or on the same vessel.
