Travelling while EAD application

I am currently a final year graduate student on a F-1 visa in the USA. I will be graduating in December 2003. I applied for my EAD card, in Vermont, for my 12 months OPT. I did not receive yet my EAD card. I am planning on travelling to Germany over Christmas.
1)Will I have troubel reentering the US?

A friend might send the EAD card, once it arrives, to me to Germany.
2) Having the EAD card with me when reentering, will there possibly be still trouble for me, having not yet found employment?

Any ideas? I depart soon, please give me some advice.
 
Okay. My other, maybe more important question is:
"Does my application get cancelled when they realize that I left the country?"
I do not understand why I cannot tell them:
"Ok, I will go home for Chistmas, but please do not cancel my application!"
My plane goes in 2 days, and I would be really thankful for any reponses that can tell me about experiences or opinions on travelling while OPT application is pending.
 
I ask my international student advisor. All she knows to say is that "travelling while applying is dangerous!" No one seems to able to give clear answers. This is really frustrating.
