Travelling to india while H1 is in process

My H1 visa is in process from august and no reply from INS yet on its status.However, The visa from my former company is stamped with validity upto sep 3, 2003. I have to go to india in the next month. Can i return using the old visa stamping? What should i expect at the port of entry?
Any advices will be appreciated.
 
You can come back on old visa stamp. You must carry your new I797 receipt, paystub and letter from employer. When I came back, I showed my passport only and they didn't ask me any question.
