I am applying for passport on Nov.7th, same day as my oath. i am planning to visit my family in Canada on Thanksgiving. If I don't receive my passport by then, what documents I should have at the border? I have to surrender my GC at the oath and my Citizenship Cert. would be sent with passport application. I will have copy of them. Would that work? I am hoping my passport will come before 27th Nov., my traveling date. Any advice? Thanks

You are in a pickle here bud, you need a passport or your original citizenship cert, no copies. Do an expideted passport aplication & tell them you have to leave the country asap.

Either wait to apply for the passport until after your trip to Canada and go to Canada with your naturalization certificate, or apply for the passport right away and see if you get the passport in time. It seems that passports are being processed very quickly nowadays, so I think you should be fairly safe in getting your passport in time for your trip.

Look for WHTI acceptable documents in your favorite search engine, or at:

A driver's license and proof of citizenship (naturalization certificate) is sufficient for land travel to Canada.
As Huracan mentioned, either apply for passport on oath day and hope to get passport you leave, or apply after your return.
Applying for US passport after your return is your safest bet since you don't have to worry about any potential delays in getting your passport before you leave.

A valid driver's license and naturalization citizenship is sufficient for land and sea travel to Canada and WHTI countries until June 1st 2009.

Yup, after this date proof of US citizneship is no longer good enough to cross a border, even a land border. At that point, US citizens will need a passport or a passcard. I believe EDLs will also be accepted, but I am not sure as CA does not issue them.

When they implemented the first part of the WHTI, about two years ago, there was a mad rush to get passports - huge delays were not uncommon. I expect the same thing will happen starting in March / April or so of next year as people start to plan their summer vacations.
