Travelling Sep 25, and coming back October 3. Problems?

Hello,

So here's my issue:

I currently am on OPT till July 2008 with an expired students visa. My H1-B is effective October 1, 2007. My employer might want me to travel September 25 internationally for business.

Questions:

1- Would I be let in the country if I come back post October 1st?
2- In general, can I travel internationally and come back or would I have to go to a consulate abroad and get my visa stamped with H1B before I begin any international travel?

I would book an appointment at an U.S. consulate aborad for visa stamping and return.
