Travelling outside the USA after TN/TD renewal Surprise!

Just want to let people be warned of something. My wife and I successfully renewed our TN/TD status Feb 2013 and traveled to and from Canada that same month. Two months later we booked a Caribbean cruise and got rejected at the terminal. The reason was that my wife's original TD visa pasted into her passport is expired.

Beware:
  • if you want to travel to a country other than the US or Mexico
  • and your dependent is not from Canada or Mexico
  • and you've renewed your TN/TD but haven't gotten a new visa sticker for your dependent
your dependent cannot to return to the US without updating their sticker visa.

I've been looking online for other situations where this has happened but I found this out the hard way. Hope this helps someone avoid a bad travel experience.

That is strange, since the AVR program applies to travel within N America and Carib has always been considered N America.

It should be pointed out that you were dealing with cruise personel who are not (nor should be) well versed on the intricacies of AVR.

Your bullets are not quite right, since if one is from canada, they need no vidsa anytime, and if one is from Mexico and goes to mexico, they cannot use AVR.

Also, AVR appies to nationals of any country, not just mexicans.

So you might want to state:
•if you want to Cruise to a country other than the US or Mexico
•and you've renewed your TN/TD thru AVR but haven't gotten a new visa sticker for your dependent

otherwise AVR works as it always has.
