Traveling with GC

Hi,

We all know how to use a GC when entering the US.
What about when leaving the US?
I always gave my I-94 at the check-in counter. Is there anyone who'll swipe my GC like they do when you clear US Immigration at POE?
If not, how are they supposed to know when somebody left the country?

No, the US has no exit controls for permanent residents.

If not, how are they supposed to know when somebody left the country?

If you leave by air, DHS got the passenger manifest before you took off. If you leave by land, the Canadians and Americans share land border crossing data.

I travel frequently to Asia on business. The airline agent ALWAYS asks if I am a permanent resident of the US (when leaving the US). I thus present my Canadian passport and GC, and BOTH get swiped into their machine. I don't know if this is mandatory, but it's happened enough on both United and Singapore Air that it seems to be some kind of policy.

Usually the airline agent will swipe your Green Card on their computer during departure.

That's not true, airlines databases and computers by no means are connected with USCIS database. They don't swipe anything in their computers, they only make sure that the spelling on the ticket corresponds to the spelling on your documents. I am working for international airlines, so this is first hands knowledge.

you sure?

Interesting what you mentioned about airline databases not being linked to USCIS. I personally know several individuals who when arrived at US POE were informed by immigration officers that they had been away for certain no. of days/months. These officers did not go through the their passports but only swiped the green card in their computers.

If airline databases are not linked to USCIS then how do immigration officers have the travel data of so many green card holders in advance?

Airlines by law have to submit passenger manifests to the USCIS. How exactly this data transfer from the airlines to the USCIS, nobody exactly sure. Airlines and USCIS do collaborate and USCIS does get the data.

I did travel with my Green Card almost 10times into the US.
They always were asking about my lenght of staying away, at the POE.
When leaving nobody swept my Gcard ever!!
Til now, they never did know about my departure date!!
