Travel with pending I-485

Hi,
I have submitted I-485 recently, not recieved a reciept yet. Have valid H1B visa. Can I travel abroad (business) prior to getting the I-485 acceptance notice?
 
How about this situation

I have a H1B which expires in nov 2008, I dont have a stamp in my passport, I applied for 140/485 on july 2nd 2007, my wife will be on H1 from october 1st 2007, would it be OK for us to travel to home country in December, attend US consulate for a H1b stamping and come back?
I applied for EAD/AP, but i am sure with the current flood of applications its going to be a while before we can get those, please advice
 
I was traveling home this Spring but had to cancel the plans because my lawyer advised againt it.

He said even after we get receipt notice (which I think might be a while) it is advisable to stay in the US for FP and EAD. I am aware that these appointments can be rescheduled but that might delay the process.
