travel while H4 to H1 conversion is in process

Hi all,
can any one let me know if i can travel India while H1 is in process. I am currently on H4. What happens if my h1 gets approved while i am in India.

If i go to canada for stamping to convert to H1 and some thing goes wrong can i return back to usa on my H4 visa(which is valid for another year)

I would like to have a valuabe suggestion from the friends of ImmigrationPortal Forum:

My wife is here on H4 visa and applied for a H1 last May and her visa is still pending. Well, my question here is can she travel to India while her VISA is in pending status...?
and if VISA is approved by the time she leaves(she is leaving in the month of Nov and returning back in Dec), can she enter on H4 visa..? If she enter on H4 will her H1 be invalid..? Please do let me know.
