gcrk, I have questions for you,
1. Is it mandatory to update Social Security office about Green card approval?
It is always good to keep your records updated.
2. If yes, then what are the advantages.
benefits like Food stamps etc. if you are eligible. I hope you don't need that
3. What is the Procedure?
Just go to the social security office and tell them that that you need to correct your card, as you now have I-551 stamp. They will give you a form to fill, and see your passport for I-551 stamp.
She will have you sign a paper and verify your address so that they can send you the card. You will receive your card in mail in 2 weeks. Alternatively, you can mail the form ss-5 (get it from http://www.ssa.gov).
The new card will not have the seal 'Work with INS authorization'
In my SS card, I don't have the seal ' Work with INS authorization only'. May by mistake SS office missed it put it. But I have seen this seal in my friends SS card.
Before several years they were not providng this seal. So it depends on when you got your card. I would apply to Social Security anyway to update my records
