Travel to Canada with GC letter

I am hoping to have GC interview done in the first week of Jan. My lawyer was telling me that if I get approved, I would get the GC letter and I can use this letter to travel to Canada. My question is does Canadian allow traveling by showing the letter only or I need a actual green card for admittance to Canada.

A letter is not sufficient - you will need either the actual green card or a temporary green card stamp in your passport.

I concur. Once you are approved at the interview, you can request an I-551 stamp before you leave INS, so you can go to Canada as soon as you want.

Or just the passport itself (without the GC stamp), if the passport is of a country that enables visa-free travel to Canada. But then Advance Parole would be needed to return to the US if the GC hasn't been approved yet, or if the GC has been approved recently but hasn't physically arrived yet(a new permanent resident can still use Advance Parole once after GC approval).
