Travel same day of submitting N-400?

Hello all,

I got my PR on 03/13/2008 so I am up for submitting my N-400 on 12/13/2013 (that is 90
days, as timeanddate.com gives). I plan to travel outside the US a day before, on 12/12/2013,
and submit my N-400 that same day 12/12/2013 and arrange for it to reach them after
12/13/2013, say on 12/16/2013.

So the question is: Do I have to be in the US when they receive the application? Or is the
fact that "I was in the US when I sent the application" good enough?

I will be away for a couple of weeks (somewhat urgently).

I'd appreciate any help in this.

Thanks!

I presume that's a typo and you meant 3/13/2009, because if you became a PR in March 2008 you'd be eligible to apply since December 2012.

You don't have to be in the US when you submit the application.

But if you will first become eligible to apply on 12/13/2013, and you send it the day before, that means your signing date and the postmark date would be before 12/13, which could cause your application to be rejected (technically they're supposed to base it on the date it arrives at USCIS, but they've been known to reject people whose signing date or postmark date is too early).

In addition, when you cut it so close to the 90-day mark, you risk being rejected if USCIS miscounts by a day or two, which has happened to several people.

Since your trip is only 2 weeks, why not just keep it simple and safe and apply when you return at the end of the two weeks.
