Transit Visa vs. Visitor visa for Canada

I need to travel through Toronto (I live in Chicago) to take Air Canada to New Delhi next month. I have H-1B status in the US with a valid stamp.
I am told that a transit visa is required to be able to change planes in Toronto. Since I was assuming that I would need a visitor visa, I already got my documents for a visitor visa and mailed those instead. Is there a problem with this? Can a multiple entry visitor visa also function as a transit visa for travel though Canada?
Any information will be appreciated.
