Hi All,
I registered today and this is my first post. Please help.
My husband is travelling to India on Air india.Coming back through Paris.
Agent says transit visa not needed. Airline says to check with French Embassy. French Embassy inMiami says Transit visa needed.

Please advise.

Thank you nkm-Oct 23,

My husband is travelling on AP. our I 485's are pending and I am the primary applicant and he is the dependent. Our H1 visa's expired and we are on our 2nd EAD's and First AP. WE have just applied for the new EAD's and AP's as they are expiring in October 2004.

The french embassy clearly said he will need a transit visa. However, we were told by the travel Agent that Air India passengers do not require this as they do not get off the plane in Paris.

Please advise.
Thanks

Go by what the french embassy says. I don't think they allow a plane full of people just sit in their airplanes at a transit location while the aircraft is serviced/refueled.
Since you don't have a valid US visa (AP is NOT considered a visa) you are better off getting a french transit visa.

Thank you so much for your quick reply. Appreciate it.

hi,

I travelled thru Air India (Paris) in dec 2003.I had to leave urgently on some personal work. You do not need transit visa only if travelling by Air India(Paris) because you will be sitting in the plane for 2-3 hrs while servicing etc is being done. They do not allow anyone to get off the plane except for the passengers whose final destination is Paris.

Same is the case while returning. You will be sitting in the plane and so do not need transit visa.

If your husband's travel is some weeks/days away, you can take the transit visa and feel more relaxed but suppose the travel is, say tomorrow, then you can go ahead and travel without the transit visa(without any issues).

Thanks.

different consulates give different opinion. for example german consulate in chicago insist that we need transit visa even though we may not get out of flight, but not other german consulates in other cities. Air india is not sure about these issues. In the end they (air india) recommened us that it is safe to take visa since while coming back/ or going to India the staff at the airline counter may ask for transit visa & can create problem. better to get visa to avoid all the hassles.

My sister travelled to India via Paris on June 1st week, they didn't get off the plane, while servicing, hence didn't need visas. My mother-in-law flew to India via Frankfurt yesterday, same thing there too, she didn't have transit visa , and didn't get off the plane. Both of them travelled by Air-India. However there is the question of what might happen, if there is some problem with the Aircraft and they need to get off, and wait for a new aircraft...I guess those will be considered emergency situations and they will issue temporary transit visas on the spot.

I presume your relatives are travelling on old green card ( before 1998) or AP. since we are on AP , I am reluctant to take chances. But I know we are spending unnecessary time& money on the visas.

Transit visa to Paris?

Thanks to all for advise. My husband just applied for the transit visa to Paris.

Hope we all get our Green cards soon so we do not have to go through these hassles any more.

Hello GC soon, Can you please write what documents are needed to apply for transit visa? Do we need to send the copies of ticket and advance parole etc.

Transit visa to Paris?

Ashu62,
My husband needed two transit visas, one for frankfurt and the second for Paris as the travel agent booked his AirIndia trip going through both cities.
He went to their websites and both wanted personal appearance at the embassies. They also gave a list which is simple.

Both Embassies asked for passport photos, passport, copies of tickets and Itenarary, APs, employment letters. They took copies of every thing. French Embassy asked for pay stub but did not check it.

It was a 15 miute process but had to drive to Miami for personal appearance.

Hope this info helps.
