Hi All,
I'm currently on H1B Visa and my H1B has been expired in the last week of September 2010 and before that my employer applied for extension of my Visa. The same is under consideration for renewal. Meanwhile, I got an oppurtunity in a Lab and they are offering me J1 Visa. My question is whether I can start working in that Lab soon after they apply for J1 Visa. Is it that I've to leave the country and get my J1 be stamped in my passport (I'm an Indian and holds Indian Passport). Any thoughts please....

Yes you can, but you need a job offer. The people who offer you your job will do the application for you, but you will need to give them a couple of papers.

raj,

A J-1 visa CAN (not always) invoke a 2 year home residence requirement under INA 212(e) before adjusting status to LPR or changing to many other nonimmigrant visas. Consider if that MIGHT apply to you and if it could be waived or be a problem in the future.
