Transfer questions. Need suggestions

Hello Friends,

I am on H1B and my wife is on H4. My questions may be very preliminary. Please excuse me. Our current visa is valid until 2007. I have found a new job in United States and the company is ready to transfer my and my wife's visa. One of the company's representative told me that after we receive the receipt number, I can continue working for my existing company untill I get a project.
1. Is it legal to work with the old company after receiving the receipt number? If no then after receiving the receipt number, can I atleast work for 15 days notice period or do I have to stop working immediately?
2. Once we get the receipt number, will our passports need to be submitted to get the visa endorsed on the passport?
3. I also would like to know that after receiving the receipt number, can my wife go to India and come back using the receipt number? or should she wait untill her H4 visa is endorsed on the passport? I am trying so that she doesn't have to go for visa stamping alone.

2. Once we get the receipt number, will our passports need to be submitted to get the visa endorsed on the passport? Yes if you go out side of US to endorse your visa. Inside US Immigration office does not need your pp. Inside US no visa will be endorsed

after my visa gets transferred, if I go to India next year, do I have to go for stamping again?
I agree my wife can use the old company's visa. Can you tell me after her visa transfer, what would she fill in the immigration form(name of my company etc) which we receive on the plane while arriving in United States.
 
If I'm moving from a non profit H1B to a profit H1B do I need to wait for the H1B approval of application by the new corporate company, to start working with them? Or is it sufficient to get the INS reciept of the application from new company to start work?

The company lawyer told me that I can start working after getting the receipt and it's not necessary to wait for approval. I would greatly appreciate if that statement is corroborated by the gurus on this board! I know that reciept is sufficient in case of visa transfer from corporte to corporte but I'm not sure about non profit to profit, if its any different.
