transfer money to canada

I'm a PR of canada and planning to transfer my money (exceeding $10,000)from US bank to a Canadian bank here. I would like to know if I can simply write a check to deposit into a US dollar account here? Is there any border crossing tax issues involved?

When I sell my house I am planing to transfer over $50,000 US to Canada. I have opened a US$ checking account and a regular Canadian checking with TD Canada Trust. The safest and easiest way is to wire the money to Canadian bank. You could also write a check and deposit it, but you would need to go into a branch and work with a teller because its foreign currency. It happens all the time so any teller would convert US$ check for you. I will convert my US$ when the rate is good. Hope this helps.
