JoeF said:Sure they can. Take for example somebody says that he falsely claimed to be a US citizen. In the course of an investigation, if CIS learns that the person posts here, they could of course subpoena Mr. Khanna to provide login details, etc. for that person. Has happened, although I don't know about it in an immigration context. For example, the RIAA subpoena'd Verizon to hand over connection logs from their DSL business so that the RIAA could find out who was illegally sharing music files.
Bottom line: don't think that you are anonymous on the Net.
Even the so-called anonymous remailers are not necessarily really anonymous. I remember the servers of a remailer in Norway being seized by police.
In the case of illegal sharing of music, it's a different thing because that is a big money problem which caused a major effort and fight from the record companies to bring about those subpoenas. I don't think that any US attorney in his right mind will support some xenophobe anti-freedom USCIS agent who might think that Jose Immigrant is maybe member AlphaRomeo on immigrationportal.com and spend countless amount of hours researching and preparing a case, to prove probable cause to a Judge to supeana the IP address and use some question posted by this member which can easily be challenged in court.
