To maintain greencard status - Urgent!!!

My mother recently got her greencard. Now can she maintain her status by staying 6 months here in US and the remaining months in India? If yes, then is the countdown for six months counted from january or from the date when the greencard got stamped?? PLEASE advice!!!

Thats great, congratulations. Now be aware that she needs to permanently reside in the US and only make temporary visits India. Doing anything else may constitute intent to abandon residency and cause her GC to be revoked.

Unfortunately there are few hard and fast rules covering exactly what constitutes abandonment, so its hard to be specific and say things like "spend at least 6 months in the US each year". As a minimum, she definitely would not want to be outside the US for more than 1 year without the benefit of a reentry permit.

There are too many folks who treat the Green Card as a border crossing card. In fairness, I think there needs to be something like this in immigration law - I am grateful that my parents and in-laws are not subject to the same scrutiny.

agree and would add they must file us tax returns each year too
