Although I have a doctoral degree, my lawyer advised me of not seeking sponsor IGA or seek a job at a state university. He told me to follow no objection.

For no objection, I should pay back $140.000 to the government and then apply for the waiver. My question is whether do you think I can finish everything and then adjust my status within a year or 16 months? Will this more likely take longer?

if you can find an IGA - by all means, follow that route.

is that $140K? darn.... that's a lot of money. I am glad my government didn't ask for more than $45. Of course, my financing was from the US govt, and it wasn't even that much.

Getting a waiver within a year - possible. Getting adjusted within a year depends solely on the way of immigration and your location.

FOr IGA, can a private university petition me for a J1 waiver. I contacted department of health and they said that they only help physicians to get the waiver. Since I am not a doctor, so there is no hope to get IGA. Is this right?
For no objection, I am worried that I only have about 15 months left for my J1. I am worried that after paying the money that there is still risk that I won't get it on time and then go back to my awful home country.

Do you think that there is a hope with IGA?

there are a lot of other govt agencies, like EPA, Army, etc. I read somewhere that if you are working on a goverment program/grant even if you are doing so through a private university, you may still be eligible for IGA. But you have to find an IGA interested in you to the degree that they would sign the papers for you. I don't know much about IGA, though. And I can't imagine paying back $140K. And then leaving with nothing.

Thanks for your answer. Do you think if a state universiy sponsors me for teaching, will this satisfy IGA? I think that no other government agency can sponsor me except department of health( as i am in the health care field) or army?Is this true? Of course, joining the army is not an option as I hate military life.

J1 waiver at district office-help help help

Please help me. Five months ago I submitted my j1 waiver at Atlanta District office based on hardship. They send me a plain receipt with out any specific and expected processing time. After two months, I sent a letter, at least, to know the processing time. No reply. By the end of three months, I wrote my second letter and made appointment through info pass. The officer did not find any information about my i-612 in her computer. She just told me that my case was transferred to Texas. On the next week, I called the national service center and asked them. They also did not see any thing in their system. Again I made an other info pass appointment and met the same officer. This time she asked me to fill a form to request the status. I wait one month and no reply. I send my 3rd letter requesting the status of my application, both to Texas and Atlanta. No reply. Today I went there and I found that the officer at reception desk and even their immediate boss do not know anything about my application. The officer complained to me that I am impatient. After two hours waiting, the officer told me she does not have any update and advised me to return the beginning of next year.
I am puzzled? Do I need a lwayer?
What can you advise me?
I really appreciate it.
