To all from India with U.S. citizen kids:

Hi Guys,

This may not be the right forum to ask this question, but did not know where else to ask (its urgent). Sorry in advance.

I am planning to apply for the PIO card [Person Of Indian Origin card] for my son at Indian Consulate, New York BY MAIL. How long does it take to receive the PIO card back? Has anyone done this before?

Thanks a lot,
SK

For kid or for you?

You applied for your Kid or yourself? I mean does it take THAT long for a 1 year old kid???

That is for my daughter. If I am in a position for PIO, I would have not visited this forum. :)
You can call consulate directly and check with them, This was a year ago and don't have to be same for each case.

1 day

I applied to NY for my kid's PIO card in Aug 2003. I had paid for Express Mail return.

The mailed it back the next day (the day after they received the package).

My friend also applied to NY for PIO card for his kids. He had forgotten to include a copy of birth certificate. They called him at home and left a voice message asking him to fax it. He did so and they issued the PIO card right away.

My experience with NY office has always been great. Whether it was passport renewal or PIO, service is great and very very prompt!

But, I will keep a couple of weeks margin when buying tickets, just to be safe.

All the best.

Is getting a PIO card for my kids better than applying for a Indian visit visa if I want to take a trip to India?

Does it come with any other benefits?

and.....

if you get visa which will be only five years (bcz kids passports are valid for 5 years only) whereas PIO card is valid for 15 years and I think it is ame fee.

If you did for your kids then what is the information to be entered in Q13 on the PIO form.

Whose DOB and Birth place they are asking for?? And what proff of residence is good enough?? Passport pages wil they be ok.

rsinha

rsinha,

You do NOT need to send a single original document wen sending by mail. Please read the PIO application form on page 3 and 4. It states clearly something to this effect - "Do not send any originals unless we have explicitly asked for them, after submission of the initial application with certified copies".

Hope this helps,
SK

amcom

amcom,

Yes, point 13 and 14 are a bit confusing. Everybody does things differently there. I just put my and my wife's name on both points 13 and 14. For proof of residence, I just stated - "Passport and Birth Certificate". I attached our Birth Certificate certified copies also.

NOTE: I have not received the PIO card yet - my application reached NY consulate on Feb 19.

Guys How about DUal CItizenship

I have seen that PIO is better then visa but How about Dual citizenship. I know we can get Indian passports for our kids which sounds muchh better option.
What are the Pros and Cons of that???

PIO card received

Just thought I would let you know that I got my son's PIO card in 8 working days from New York Consulate. They are pretty good with their service.

Thanks to all who gave their inputs for my original post.
