TN1 to L1 ( status change )

Hi Team,

I need your expert advice on the said subject , if we are on TN1 visas in US and eligible for L1 ( means company internal transfer ) - is it possible to do Adjustments of status from TN1 to L1 inside the US.

Actually currently L1 processing is on Hold because of COVID . and my company want me to move from Canada to USA ( company has operations in canada and office in USA , so thats not an issue) , so initially they suggest move on TN1 visa and later down the road based on circumstances if want to change the status TN1 to L1 they told they will file that.

i am curious is such status change is possible ( TN1 to L1 ) ? and is it easy or bit difficult ?

You can switch to L1 by mail form inside US, but you can ALTERNATIVELY, as a Cdn, get L1 at the border, like TN. I would do this.

For switching later, since you will be doing the same job both before and after, the switch will be seamless.

Doesn’t L1 require working for the foreign affiliate for one year? Is it L-1A or B you are changing into? If L-1A, I thought TN doesn’t apply to managers?

VJ, re-read what the poster said. He works for the same company now. It doesn;t have to be a managerial transfer.

Thanks Nelsona and VJ .
Yeah , i cross check with the Lawyer, and Nelsona is right , we can do it once we are in US.
btw i am Subject Matter Expert and my company plan for same job - L1B and i am in the foreign affiliate >6 years .

lets hope TN to L1B will be smooth change via mail.
