TN Visa Renewal / Extension

Hello,

I'm up for a TN renewal/extension close to end of this year. 'm Canadian citizen roughly 13 plus years on TN, my wife almost the same and currently on TN. My employer is ready to do I-129 (employer has immigration dept. working with big law firm to do the filing) or border. Which can be a better option or it does not matter - travelling to border Vs filing ? Especially, if filing I 129 checks on number of years on TN impacting their decision, sometimes border agents during travel or renewal do bring up. In the past, all our renewals/extensions have been through border. Anyone, if you can throw some light, your help is much appreciated. Thank you!

I am on my 4th TN, got three TNs at the border, one TN with employer filed I129. Getting at the border is convenient with a good application plus proper supporting documentation. Unless filed under premium processing, I129 take some time to get the approval/I94s compared to getting this at the border.

I129 takes times however once it filed your status on TN continue till USICS take decision on your application even your current TN expire. Only problem I see you can not travel outside USA. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I got TN using I129 and told by company immigration department.

Yes, you can travel outside US without the I-129 being considered abandoned since you are NOT requesting a change of status, but if you return after your original expiry date, but before your I-129 is approved, you will have to do a border petition in any event.
