TN Visa for Canadian resident outside of Canada

I am Canadian and have TN Status to work in the US (obtained at the border by CBP), but I still reside in Canada most of the time and travel to the US to work a few times a month when I need to.

I am considering moving my residence to a third country and would like to know if this impacts my current TN. Also when it comes up for renewal is the process any different if I am not Canadian resident (I would plan just to go to the same POE that I did originally when I was Canadian resident).

Appreciate any thoughts.

It does not impact. Your citizenship is the key. Once you have the TN (which you can get by entering US from ANY country), you can enter US at any POE.

I currently file Canadian and US tax returns but because I am Canadian resident I pay only Canadian income taxes. From the third country I will pay US taxes but will not pay Canadian taxes.

thanks for your response. sorry to ask you one more time, I just want to be clear about something. Did you mean you currently pay taxes in Canada for the income you earned "only" in Canada and not for your US job?

No. As a Canadian resident I pay tax on my worldwide income including any income I earn while working in the US under the TN. I don't pay US tax on income I earned while working in the US. I do specialized consulting work under contract for the US company.

Okay got it

Just to be claer, and this is not the place fora tax discussions, mforti does not pay taxes in US on hos US income because the treaty allows for contractors (self-employed) to be exempt from US tax if they live in Canada. If one is an employEE, they cannot exempt their income from US taxation.
