Tn Visa Beginner - Please Advise - Thx

Hello,
I am going to apply for a TN visa for the first time and need advise on what to expect.
I got a job as a database engineer and was wondering if it qualifies under the engineering category since I have a degree in CSc?
The employment letter did not state the one year limit though it contains a start date. Would that be a problem?
The employment letter contains the temporary address I was using while in the US and I don't know if to use the letter with that address or change it to my address in Canada?
Please help!
Thanks very much in advance!

You should get a TN letter, not try to use the employment offer to get TN.

A TN letter addresses specific issues like the TN category, and describes job duties to support this. It may also describe the educational requirements that you met (and that you will show at the border). And importantly, it will state the one-year term.

The employment offer letter usually is not good enough.

Hello Nelsona,
thanks for responding to my question. How can I get a sample of a TN letter so that I could discuss it with the employer? please help!

Since you were able to find this site, I'm sure your googling skills are quite adept. Happy searching.

Or ask your employer - they might be able to provide it if they know about the TN stuff.

There are many TN sample letters out there on the internet - I've written a few myself and then had the company official sign it then I took it to the border. If the company you are going to work for doesn't understand how to write a TN letter, maybe you need to do it for them.

Again - the employment offer letter is NOT a TN letter.

Okay, you guys are being a little mean this morning - maybe even inflicting a little torture to psierra.:D

Psierra,

Here are the specifics:

1. The letter must contain either a start date or a time period not to exceed 365 days. So it can say "starting on October 1, 2007 and ending on September 30, 2008" or "starting on the date of approval by USCIS and to continue for a period of 365 after this approval". This very important.

2. The degree needs to match the job. Here is a link to the Dept. of Labor website that has the description of your degree related to your job. The job description needs to be quite in depth.

http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos042.htm.

3.The salary needs to make sense - can't be $30,000 for a rocket scientist.

Alta Al is right. At first I thought tnvisaexpert was just trying to solicit business on this forum and a clearing house for lawyers. But after looking at his/her website, and looking at the prices I changed my mind. In addition to this tnvisaexpert has offered some object advice. So for $ 99 or whatever the charge is, it's probably worth a look.

Besides, if the advice if wrong we'll have a public flogging and thrashing of tnvisaexpert medieval style in the public square. :p

I think the only thing that makes me mad about tnvisexpert is that they thought of it before me.

tnvisaexpert,

Like I said, I wish I had thought of it first. Plus you get to live in Santa Monica, while I'm stuck lowly Huntington Beach.:o

I wish something like this was around when I was first doing this. You're charging a very reasonable price for the information.
