Hi, I am on a one year TN. I wish to understand how the TN to GC works.

1) Is this something you can do without getting the Employer involved?

2) how long does the entire process take? I imagine if it takes more than a year, the next time you go to renew your TN, it will say in the system that you have immigrant intent and you will be denied TN?

Hi;
1. Your choices aside from employer sponsored GC application are either marriage to a US Citizen or sponsorship by a US Citizen relative. Marriage is FAR quicker than sponsorship via a relative in most cases.

2. Depends on where you file and when you file but it will take longer than 1 year. You want to file when you have a year on your TN or as close as humanly possible.
You need to get to the EAD as quick as possible as this gets you off of TN dependency.

Hopefully Nelsona will respond with which forms need to be filed and in what order.

Of course the employer has to get involved! They are your sponsor. They have several obligations as your sponsor.

Theprocess will take several years, but the progression from TN to GC will first involve switch to an EAD, which can take abot 3 month.

But now we are getting into the Tn t oGC process which I suggest you look farther fown on this board to find very well explained.
