TN renewal through POE

Hey everyone,

This is my first post on here so bare with me.

My current TN status is set to expire on July 5th and my company is paying for me to cross the border again to renew. Since it expires right around Canada Day on July 1st, I was planning on going through Ottawa and staying there a few days for the festivities. My question is with the timing of the renewal. Do I need to renew my visa before it expires or is it alright to come back to the US after it expires, around the 9th or so?

Basically, it matters more for my employer than me but I was wondering for the purposes on the dates to travel.

Also, in terms of the renewal letter, should it be in the same format that my original letter was in or should it explicitly say that I'm renewing it or what's the best way to deal with it? Since the company I work for is fairly small, I'm the first Canadian to work for them so I'm trying to do most of the footwork so they know for the future. If there are any examples of sample renewal letters around, I'd appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Anyways, thanks for your help.

You can apply after it expires. I would carry some evidence that I left US before it expired however, just to be safest. It can be a gas receipt or anything simple.

The letter does not have to say you are renewing, but I always feel it is better to acknowledge that 'due to change/readjustment etc' your services are requested for another 1-year term. Current dated later with no specifc start date.

I guess my next question would be is how does the expiration process actually work? Is it possible to renew your TN through a POE before it actually expires or do you have to wait for it to lapse and then reapply? My boss was wondering exactly how it works and I wasn't really sure.
