TN Letter Format

For those interested, especially for people who are drafting their own letters, here's a general outline of what we think should be in a TN letter. Like most business letters a TN letter does not have to have follow ONE exact format but there are main categories that should be included in the letter.

Header: Applicant Name, Employer Name, Intent to file petition for work visa under NAFTA Appendix 1603.D.1, the Profession category (as listed under NAFTA) e.g. Management Consultant (listing of Professions)

Body 1: Employer profile describing the type of business, the size, the industry, details of the specific group that you will be working with, and salary

Body 2: Applicant profile describing the role that you will play in the group, describe relevant work experience, and education background

Closing Paragraph: Culminates the above points and state that applicant is qualified to attain this position under NAFTA.

Mention supporting documents enclosed with the letter such as CV, transcripts, diplomas, etc.

Length requirement? There is no minimum or maximum but we find that most letters are 2 -3 pages in length excluding supporting documents.

There is no requirement for thge letter to mantion anything about the candidates credentails ("describe relevant work experience, and education background").

The candidate has been offered the job, so no need to prove that he is qualified. Required credentails for getting TN are to be provided by the candidate.

Neither does the letter require "culminate" (whatever that means), and nor should it list what the candidate will provide as prrof of eligibility

So, "body 2", is completely superfluous. Closing paragraph is meaningless.

Oh, and it must mention either length of proposed employement, or end date, not to exceed 3 years from petition date.

Try again.

Thanks for the feedback Nelsona!

I agree that it is technically not mandatory to include description of candidates role or company information but it certainly helps & makes the interview, if any, so much faster.

Yes it must mention the 3 year period.

So, like I said. back to the drawing board. Spoofing a website and claiming to be an expert doesn't make it so, eh?
