TN ending- kids still in school

Hello all,
Have searched but couldn't find an answer, thought I have different options !
Here is the situation and hoping some one has seen this or experienced it:
On TN, family on TD- 3 yr TN will expire end of April, will not renew TN at this point. Kids will finish school June end.
Have tickets to go to POE, get Canadian DL and come back in to pack (ruturn ticket 5 days after)- (US DL expires with TN). However, some advised against this, better option I-539! we still have the tickets etc...
My question:
1- Should I (alone) go to get the Canadian DL and come back to pack while family apply for I-539? or Should all of us apply for I-539 and while waiting pack etc..??
2- Should we stick to the plan and all cross the border stay for 5 days get DLs and again all of us come back to pack?!! Border problem, why, where, etc..
3- What is the option to get driver's license ?
4- What is /are our options?
First time on TN, don't have experience and have not gone through this or any other situation. Thought it is straight forward, you finish TN, go home, come back to pack up etc...
Highy appreciate information. DL is a major pain!
THANK YOU.

What, was my answer on canuckabroad not complete enough? Or was it not what you wanted to hear?
To recap, for the entertainment of others:

1. You won't be let in. you need I-539 for B2 and stay put once your TN/TDs are expired.
2. 5 days is not long enough to establish for CBP that you have moved back to Canada, especially that you are trekking your whole family back. You don't live in Canada for 3 years!
3. Renewing TN, or going to Canada yourself now, before TN expiry, and somehow convincing the province that you live there (you said you have some property there -- is it rented out? can you prove domicile?). Do not leave US after your TN expires unless you are prepared to re-establish your Cdn home before going back.
4. As I explained, your kids need status to stay in US. They will not be allowed back in as tourists (assuming you can convince border that you even qualify as a tourist) with the purpose of going to school, as that is not permitted. By instead filing I-539 they would become B2-pending, and unlikey to raise any concerns at school.

You should have come to forums sooner. The idea is to get and maintain TN so that you leave when YOU want to, not on some arbitrary date that was set 3 years ago. You've essentially put yourself in the same bind that someone who gets laid-off with 2 weeks notice and has to scramble. You didn't have to do it this way.

Ask your firm for a TN renewal. Is there some reason they no longer want you? Its not too late if they are willing to keep you. Quick trip to the border next week, followed by to your state DMV for DL renewal. Quit in June.

... and you leased a car until August. What were you expecting to do between April and August on that score??
