TN Credentials

Hi there,

I'm looking to move to the U.S. with my wife - she wants to go to law school there (but hasn't been accepted anywhere yet - we just want to get to our sort of "target area" and get adjusted).

I'm talking to a couple companies down there to come down to work on mobile applications as a developer. Of course I know that there is no TN category for programmers, so the role will have to be worded such that it emphasizes my analysis and design duties, but I'm more or less concerned about my credentials.

I have a 3-year Computer Programmer/Systems Analyst diploma (2005). I also received an award for academic achievement in this.

Now my latest title has been Software Architect (2 years), which from a standard job description is similar to a Systems Analyst type role.

I ran my own business for about 5 years where I worked as a consultant to local minor sports organizations to develop software to streamline their scheduling and time management system (took them from binders to SaaS with all their players, parents, and staff able to get instant updates). I have a reference letter from a client I worked with for about 5 1/2 years for this.

My other roles have been mostly acting as a computer programmer - however I did have one where I was actively involved in the design, development, and deployment of the corporate intranet portal (which was about 1 1/2 years).

So I am wondering a) what are my chances of being accepted at the border, and b) should I look more at Computer Systems Analyst, or maybe something like Management Consultant?

As you realize, since you only have a diploma, you will need 3 years of documented experience in work that would meet the requirements of that category. So, a TN in CSA will require 3 years CSA experience. I don't think trhis should be a problem.

Your awards and any unrelated experience mean nothing in terms of getting TN.

I wouldn't puruse the MC route, unless CSA fails.
