Hi @nelsona - i received TN approval for 3 years, but the electronic i-94 is only valid for 4 months.
my passport is valid for 9 more years.
1) Is this normal?
2) what will i need to do to extend the i-94?
Please advise.

Was your passport valid for 10 years when you got the TN at the border? If so, they have made an error, which can be corrected at ta local CBP office.
Or, in any case, you could go to the border and ask for an I-94 that is valid for the duration of your TN.
You would need to do this at some point before your I-94 expires.

Call your nearest deferred inspection site and explain, if the i94 was old from another TN before it's likely it was not processed properly, CBP can usually do this correction over the phone and you'll see the online version updated immediately. Your employer will probably ask you to do this sooner than later for their sake of i9 verify.

If you renew with same employer in 3 years, remember this incident and explain again with the resolution above, it's likely it'll show 4 months in their system somewhere and agent will get confused when reviewing.

Not sure why you reference the possibility of an old TN, but your good advice to try deferred inspection agrees with what I suggested.

Well, when I got a new TN from new company, I had 1 year left on different company TN i94, and CBP at border used the same i94 and did not extend expire date even though new TN stamp is 3 years, so I called after and resolved per above.

Thank you @nelsona , yes my passport was valid for 10 years when I crossed the border. i shall contact the deferred Inspection sites then.
thank you so much - greatly appreciate your guidance./\

Thank you @jixca , I will contact deferred site to get it correct. Appreciate your help.
And this is the very first time I got TN so no old i94 from TN.

I have one follow up doubt about class of admission - @nelsona @jixca
my electronic i -94 mentions the 'Class of Admission : B2', this doesn't look correct as well, can you please confirm.
Thank you.

Yeah, call or visit the sites mentioned and sort it with CBP if you have no plans to leave USA, otherwise you can leave US and re-enter on correct status. As expected your i94 was old and not updated.

Deferred Inspection is the solution. The error/omission is CBP's, not yours. They can easily fix this.

The other possibility is that the if I-94 that was issued at the border (I assume you got it at a border), wasn't entered in the system yet. If you got your TN by mail, then the I-94 issued with the USCIS approval is your I-94, and it will never be entered into the e-system.

I had a Preflight Inspection at Canadian airport. so i didn't get the hard copy of I-94 at PFI so that I could review the information, the electronic copy I checked mentions 'B2' and it has a correct entry date but only valid until 4months from now.

Yeah, so it was completely botched by CBP. They should easily fix this. Because you technically don't have an I-94 for TN to provide your employer's I-9, you will need to do this quickly, in order to work.

Thank you so much @nelsona @jixca . I got that fixed today. Appreciate your timely help and guidance /\ :)

Whenever entering via airport, don't use the automatic (non-GE) kiosk and see agent to manually process for TN (for both new and existing). Those kiosks are B1/B2 only and that may have been why your got a B2 if you used it first to get a receipt and then saw agent to process TN.

Global Entry/Nexus machines are different, you can add your status to it once you become member.

Thank you for information, I would be mindful . and I did not use the kiosks actually - went directly to the Pre flight inspection officers.
