TN and 1099 Contractor?

I have a TN and I'm working for a consulting company providing services to a 3rd party. I'm currently half way through 2 weeks at the client's site in San Francisco. I'll be heading back to Vancouver where I'll be working for the remainder of the year.

I have 2 questions.

1) My employer asked me if I wanted to be paid as an employee on payroll or as a contractor. Which should I choose?

2) Does my 2 weeks working in San Francisco mean I have to file California and US income taxes?

1. Contarctor is best since (a) you are in canada so should be paid as a Cdn if an employee, and (b) the fringe benefits that you will not get are useless to you, and you should be paid more on 1099 -- make sure you aske for that.
2. Not if you are a contractor.

Looking forward to January, I'll be fully relocating to SF. Will 1099 still be the preferred option?

Then it will be up to you. You need medical coverage, you will no longer be taxed in Canada, so employee benefits become more important.
