TN-1 Systems Analyst Sucess Story

Got offered a job as a Proj Mgr in Chicago, Im from Toronto. Did all necessary research myself. Crafted a TN letter, sent it to the company HR to type up on a letter head. Went over the Peace Bridge into Buffalo (not the Niagara Falls route). Applied as a Computer Systems Analyst, TN officer read my letter, looked at my degree (Software Engineering from accredited Canadian University). Salary was disclosed as required on the letter. Officer asked me the following:

Q1: Have you ever been arrested before? No
Q2: Have you ever applied for a TN before? No
Q3: How long have you been an analyst? 4-5 years
Q4: Where did you work? Company X, Company Y, Company Z
Q5: How long did you work at Company X? About a year and a half

It took about 10 mins total time, paid the $56.00, ate lunch and went back home. Will move another day.

Tip 1: Have a bullet proof TN letter.
Tip 2: Dress nicely, suit is not necessary but a collared shirt is good.
Tip 3: Be prepared, have all your original supporting documents and copies of them. (Passport, Resume, TN Letter, Transcript, Degree etc)

Good for you.

You did it the same way did it back in '96.
The only difference was that the INS officer back then reviewed it by FAX prior to me showing up. I recommend this to everyone as it can save you a lot of heartache.

Be prepared. Practice the questions with someone before showing up so you don't have to stumble through your answers.

Good job.

Congrats.

Just got my TN renewed (first renewal) on Feb. 16.

I had Patouski (sp?), grey hair with glasses, a very reasonable guy. It took less than 5 minutes.

I only waited for 15 minutes, I guess it was due to the bad weather.

Hey Bullet!. I have one update, specificaly with respect to the "went back home. move another day" part. When you finaly do move, and re-enter the US you may be given some grief. Appearently, you are supposed to proceed immidiately to work the next day after you get the TN.

I got some grief, when I tried to re-enter the US after I did the same thing. It worked out in the end, but do expect some flack. Just a heads up..

Yea I am expecting some 'flak'. I am just going to say I am waiting on my SSN because my emlployer requires it soon and that I am doing virtual training/orientation from Toronto up to that point.

Did you specify a start date on your letter? I'm assuming it was around the time you got the approval and that's why there might be an issue.

What will the time gap be between your approval and move to the US?

I'll be going to get my TN soon and I'm trying to sort out the timing, logistics, etc.
