Hopefully this will be last time pass and VSC will show some degree of dignity.

Please post if you wish to go for US citizenship - why? What advantage do you see in it? If not decided - what is that stops you from deciding?

'No' folks have option to post or not!

I would like to go for it since that is the ONLY way to collect Social Security since I have contributed quite a lot in the last 6 years. But before I dream about citizenship, my GC is more important at this time.

Once I have citizenship, I can move back to India and still collect social security.

I will take citizenship and go back home land and do something.

1. Social Security
2. No limit on how long I can stay out of US of A
3. Can come back if i choose to work, whenever i want to.

Do you really need citizenship to claim social security? I am not sure. Can someone point me, if anyone has any pointers?

Hi JK ..
I was thinking the same thing .. I think I read somewhere that GWB (Bush) was talking about passing some kind of bill where the temp (H1) workers will be able to get their SS contributions back ....but I guess that wont happen ..GWB wont win any ways ..

I voted for No .. because I don't know the real benefits of becoming citizen and again you have to file more documents to USCIS for naturalization. I had enough frustration and anxieties with my Green Card process and still not approved yet.

And BTW my history is not that good.

And to reply to anonymous's post, I believe that you can still collect SS benefit on green card. Will post data on this topic.

as far as my knowledge goes, you don't need citizenship to claim SS provided you live in US of A and have GC. But, if you have citizenship, you can get SS check mailed out to which ever country you live in. I read it some place and this is how i understood.

Folks, correct me if i am wrong.

I do not have the pointers now, but I remember that one has to contribute for 10 years before Indian born becomes eligible socisoa security.

For people with Gross income more than 20000 it is 10 years. If gross income is more than 20000 you will get 4 points for each tax filing. And one needs 40 points inorder to get eligibility for SS earnings. All the IT pros. get it in 10 years.

Thanks aks for the link.

That is very long and convoluted document. Here is what I could make out:
if you have earned 40 credits, i.e worked in the US for 10 years and
a citizen of a list of countries including India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh,
you can receive benifits irrespective of where you stay or your PR status. You do not need to be a citizen of the US.

Correct me if I am wrong.

well, I haven't read the whole story. But, my understanding is, if we keep the country names aside, one has to be a citizen to avail SS benefits staying out of USA. I may be wrong. If you have read it otherwise, can you please post those few lines here.

Also, 40 creadits doen't mean that one can start claiming SS income in his mid 30s'. Ages >= 67 can only claim, other than disabled or any other reasons which i am not aware of.

I think by the time we get our GC we will have choice of Dual Citizenship. Then we can really be incharge of our decisions. Let take opinion poll again at that time

So do you want me to start another time pass - would like to apply for Indian citizenship? :D

I know there are people of other nationality too here - can I expect something from them too?

Look at section 3C, and read till the 6th exception at the following link: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/international/your_ss.html

The age requirement applies to retirement benifits only. You may receive retirement benifits at 62 if you retire, but you will get reduced payments. 67 is the full retirement age. Look here for details

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin...lva=140&p_li=&p_faqid=350&p_created=960221956

So, the reasons why I need citizenship is to stay for longer periods out of US and also can come back here to work again without any hassels.
